October 29, 2012 – South Florida Medical Research has announced that it is seeking participants for a clinical study on nocturia, a frequent nighttime urination problem that interferes with one’s ability to sleep through the night.
Nocturia is a common urological problem which if left untreated, may lead to sleep deprivation caused by the repeated nighttime trips to the bathroom. The effects of nocturia may also compromise an individual’s quality of life during daytime hours as well as at nighttime. A person without nocturia can sleep 6 to 8 hours without having to urinate, whereas a person with severe nocturia may have to get up to urinate five or six times during the night.
Nocturia primarily occurs after the age of 55, but may also occur at a younger age. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 65% of adults between age 55 and 84 reported a nocturia disturbance at least a few nights per week.
Nocturia may be the result of excess urine production, high fluid intake, untreated diabetes (Types I or II), congestive heart failure, edema (swelling) of the legs, sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, certain medications, and other medical conditions. It is important to get complete examination and consult your doctor with any questions about your condition.
South Florida Medical Research is currently conducting a clinical trial to test the effectiveness of medication to treat nocturia.
All trial-related visits, testing and study medications or placebos will be provided to participants at no cost, and compensation for travel costs may be available.
